MIAMI – JULY 14, 2022 – Today, Univision Noticias, the award-winning news division of TelevisaUnivision and the most trusted source of news for U.S. Hispanics, premieres its newest documentary #IamVanessaGuillen: One survivor launches a movement to end military sexual trauma.

Univision Noticias’ documentary follows the 2020 murder of Army soldier Vanessa Guillen at Fort Hood’s military base and what it meant for Karina Lopez. Two years after surviving the sexual assault on the same base, Lopez created a viral Facebook post with the hashtag #IamVanessaGuillen. It quickly went viral, prompting others to speak up and make military sexual trauma more visible throughout the country.

IamVanessaGuillen chronicles Karina’s first time going public with her trauma, following other Latina military women who come forward demanding the end to the abuse of active-duty soldiers and the right to justice.

Through Karina’s case, other soldiers’ stories, and expert voices, the “#IamVanessaGuillen” documentary film sheds light on the profound issues of racism, sexual violence, and trauma that the military has historically neglected.

“We hope this film elevates the stories of Karina and all the other survivors that shared their testimonies with us, and that their voices serve as catalysts to raise awareness about this issue both within military and veteran communities, as well as among civilians,” said Andrea Patiño Contreras, documentary director.

Most of the survivors featured in the film are Latina. They represent the Hispanic demographic which is now the fastest growing minority population in the U.S. military.1

“#IamVanessaGuillen highlights who witnessed their rights being violated, who weren’t believed, and whose lives were cut short. This documentary strengthens Univision Noticias’ focus on empowering the voices of Hispanic communities through raising awareness for their livelihoods across the United States and beyond,”

said José Ángel Gonzalo, Senior Director and Managing Editor of Univision Noticias Digital.

IamVanessaGuillen was produced by David Adams and Andrea Patiño Contreras, and edited by Patiño Contreras and Anna Clare Spelman.

True to Univision Noticias’ digitally innovative style, the 73-minute documentary is presented with additional multimedia online that explore the story in more detail. That includes a website with text, graphics, and photos, as well as videos to be shared on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.
